Vienna. As well as beautiful architecture, a rich history and some truly world-class museums, it boasts some great places to eat and drink in – from high end restaurants to down-to-earth beer cellars: the best of both worlds.
Whenever we are in Vienna, we always try and get a visit in to the following:
Entler has a modern feel – in both the menu and aesthetics. When in season, game is a regular part of the menu – their venison is recommended. They also have a rather good wine list, with local Austrian vintages predominating and with a price range for every pocket.
If you want somewhere quiet with a classy – but unpretentious – ambience, Entler might be the place for you. (Please note that they do not accept cards – cash, as they say, is king)
Quite the polar opposite in terms of style is our favourite bierkeller in Vienna: the Esterhazykeller. I say bierkeller – I could equally call it a weinkeller since wine outstrips beer on the menu – but I always drink beer here, so for me it is always associated with beer. As the name implies, this is a cellar – a bit of a jumble of underground rooms – and has the feel of a bohemian speak-easy about it. Food is tasty, well presented and just what you need after a day site-seeing: schnitzels, goulash, chicken cordon-bleu. They usually have 6 or 7 salads on offer as well as a few vegetarian options.
